User Account Control (UAC) is a feature within Windows Vista designed to provide an extra layer of security to resolve a specific security problem that has existed in previous versions of Windows The security problem has occurred when users log in with an account that has administrative permissions If a computer becomes infected with malicious software (malware) while a user is logged on, the malware can elevate its permissions to the same permissions as the user If the user has administrative permissions, the malware has administrative permissions In the past, the recommendation has been to ensure that users don t have local administrative permissions (meaning they aren t added to the local administrators group) From a security standpoint, this has worked However, from a usability standpoint it hasn t always worked Several applications that users need simply don t work without the user s having local administrative permissions

The solution is UAC UAC allows a user to be logged on with a non-administrative account, but any time an activity requires administrative permissions, the user is prompted to provide administrative credentials The obvious benefit is that if malware tries to do something, the user will immediately be notified For example, your system may become infected by a new virus You re working in Microsoft Word or Internet Explorer and suddenly the UAC dialog box pops up asking for approval to do something This becomes a clear warning to you that something is wrong If you are logged on with an administrative account and you try to do a task that requires administrative permissions, by default a dialog box similar to Figure 9-8 will appear You can modify the local security policy (presented later in this chapter) to change this behavior

When you are logged on with a standard user account, and you try to do something requiring administrative permissions, you will be prompted with a dialog box that allows you to enter the credentials another account s that has administrative permissions
